How Do I Know If Microwaving Food Is Safe and Healthy?

For a while now there have ongoing debates as to whether microwaving food is safe and healthy or does render foods devoid or their minerals and essential vitamins. The purpose of this article is to lay to rest all the stigma attached to the subject. This is better comprehended with a deeper understanding of how particles are heated in a microwave. According to Harvard Medical School, “Microwaves cook food using energy waves that are similar to radio waves”. These waves are shorter in length by comparison. The waves present mainly affect water molecules. They also affect other molecules that are electrically asymmetrical. Which are molecules that are on one end positively charged and the other negatively charged according to the study.

A number of myths surround microwaves. You may have heard that microwaves increase cancer risk or the far fetched ‘microwaves make your food radioactive’. Less common ones include that of ‘any non-metal dish is safe for the microwave’. While metals are a big no-no when it comes to heating food in a microwave, there are alternate materials one can use.

A 2011 study in Environmental Health Perspectives showed that estrogenic activity (EA) can cause health issues. The EA found comes from plastic products. Microwaving plastic, in most cases, even BPA free or microwave safe plastics speeds up the break down of the container.

Does Microwave Radiation Harm You?

Firstly, microwaves are not radioactive but electromagnetic. This means that your food CANNOT become radioactive. Varied opinions exist about ‘the effects of radiation produced by microwaving food’. There is no research indicates that the harm is evident, only plausible. There is some evidence to suggest that microwaves are a preferred cooking method in some cases due to the increasingly short duration of exposure to heat. However, it is imperative that your containers are microwave safe and plastics need to labeled as safe to use. While plastic does release a certain amount of chemicals they fall way within the safe to consume limit according to the Institute of Health and Consumer Protection.

Nutrient Value with Microwaves

It is important to note that certain nutrients break down when exposed to heat such as water-soluble vitamins that include vitamin C and certain B vitamins, fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E, and K, along with minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sodium. This happens irrespective of the heating process. Whether on a stove or in a microwave, the loss can range from 15%-20% of the nutritional value.

Hence, the scientific community understands that microwaving food is not the culprit for destroying nutritional content in foods. It the process of heating that causes breakdown and loss. However, research does show that certain foods are absorbed better when cooked. For example, eggs are a 180% more digestible source of protein when cooked. Also, steamed broccoli holds more glucosinolate than its boiled counterpart. The compound is responsible for giving the green hero it’s cancer-fighting properties.

Short and Uneven Cooking May Not Kill Bacteria

When it comes to cooking your food it is important to ensure that heat is spread out evenly. Ideally, you want to microwave/ cook your meal at the right temperature. The safe zone is at 80 degrees Celsius or close to 170 degrees Fahrenheit. If the dish is deep try mixing it up if possible for better uniformity. A microwaves heat usually penetrates up to 1.5 inches. This can be risky when cooking thicker slices of meat and poultry. Uncooked meat increases the risk of food poisoning. For best results, use a microwave in conjunction with a stove or hob. After half cooking your meat feel free to toss it in a zip lock bag for the remainder.

Short Cooking Preserves The Highest Amount Of Nutrients

Perhaps the greatest concern if you are someone who spends heavily on organic produce. Uncooked and unprocessed foods are known to possess the highest amount of nutrients. This puts into perspective why certain people choose to adopt the lifestyle of consuming food raw. The age-old grandmothers’ philosophy from ‘ground-to-hand and hand-to-mouth’ still finds its way into many modern healthy-eating books. However, this lifestyle and palette may not be possible for everyone. So, at the bare minimum to try and limit the amount of time your food is cooking. Health tip: Use a minimal amount of water when cooking your vegetables to avoid losing out on the water-soluble minerals. Try and consume the water left in the utensil after cooking if possible. When cooking meat add the aujus back on to the dish (I promise you it tastes fantastic).

Ways To Eat Healthier and Safer

If health is your priority along with feeling good mentally and physically then pay close attention. It is important to remember if you are underweight or overweight it is not due to nutrients dying during the process of cooking. Here are some general pointers to eat better.

For People Who are Overweight
  • Reduce the calories consumed during the course of your day. Use the calorie counter mentioned above.
  • Increase protein intake to roughly 35% of your total calories. Protein and carbohydrates translate to 4 calories per gram. On the other end, fats make up 9 calories per gram. Protein not only helps fuel your muscles and recover but keep you feeling full for longer.
  • Add vegetables and fruit to your list of snacks, the concept behind ‘healthy eating’ is simple. Eat foods that are low in calories so you can consume a greater volume feeling full.
  • For example, a hundred grams of carrot consists of 41.35 calories. On the other hand, 100 grams of cashew nuts comprises 553 calories. If you are on a 2,000 calorie diet a handful of cashews CANNOT leave you feeling satiated for long.
  • Create a caloric deficit between 200-300 calories from your current maintenance coupled with resistance training and watch your weight drop. Ideally, you want to lose no more than 500g to 650g of weight per week. Anything beyond is considered extreme and impacts hormone levels and alters your mood, usually the number one reason people give up on a diet.
  • Use the best digital kitchen scale in UAE to measure your food so that you do not consume more than required.
For People Who are Underweight
  • A caloric surplus is required to gain weight. This means eating 200-300 calories over your maintenance weight.
  • A protein rich diet along with a good resistance training program can help you build a strong frame.
  • Since fats are higher in caloric value consider eating more almonds, peanut butter, almond butter, and olive oil in case you have a small appetite. It can help you reach the desired caloric requirement without feeling stuffed.
  • Consider buying the best juicer in UAE ( I recommend the Nutribullet) to help you make calorie dense shakes. Consider adding full-fat milk, bananas, skinned almonds, peanut butter, a scoop of protein powder along with some frozen berries. This can give you a tall glass amounting 500-700 calories based on the quantity used.
  • Try and consume foods like full-fat cottage cheese, lean beef, and avocados instead of junk food when gaining weight. Micronutrients play a major role in overall health and cannot be substituted.

Microwave Myths Debunked

  • It is best to choose a cooking process suited for foods that are a staple in your diet. Be it simmering, boiling, frying, poaching or grilling. Research how you should prepare certain foods
  • Invest in microwave-safe containers to microwave food in a safe and healthy manner or use glass and ceramic materials to heat your food.
  • Expose your food to heat for the shortest amount of time
  • Microwaves DO NOT make your food radioactive.
  • In some cases, microwaving food is safe and healthy, and proven to be the better cooking method to opt for

In the end, microwaving food is safe and healthy. Choose a good microwave to address your cooking and reheating needs in an easy manner. For those seeking a healthier lifestyle, implement the points above to derive greater nutritional content from your meats and veggies. Bon Apetit!

8 Ways of Cooking Eggs in a Microwave

Want to start the day with a healthy and delicious breakfast? Cooking eggs in a microwave is a super-sonic alternative for you to get your day started. Here are 8 ways of cooking eggs in a microwave. Sounds interesting right? Read through my experiences to save yourself some time. I’ve experimented endlessly before penning down various recipes and methods of cooking eggs in a microwave. With simple-to-make recipes, breakfast will be tasty and healthy. Yes, you heard me, TASTY and HEALTHY! Save yourself time and effort of cooking early in the morning by using a good microwave instead of the stove.

1. Two-Minute Microwave Scrambled Eggs with Cheese

Scrambled eggs are perhaps the easiest dish to whip up in a microwave. This recipe takes just 2 minutes to prepare. All you need is a microwave, eggs, and garnishing of your choice. It’s an egg-cellent idea and takes absolutely no time to conjure up. Here are the ingredients required for the recipe and a step-by-step preparation guide.

2-Minute Scrambled Eggs with Cheese

Ingredients: 2 eggs, 2 tablespoons milk, 2 tablespoons shredded cheese, and salt, pepper, and any other herbs you choose to use. Personally, I enjoy tossing a little parsley to the mix.

  • Coat a 12 oz. microwave-safe coffee mug or another dish with cooking spray.
  • Add eggs and milk to it and beat till blended.
  • Microwave on HIGH for 45 seconds and then stir. Microwave until the eggs are almost set, 30 to 45 seconds longer.
  • Top with cheese and season with salt, pepper, and herbs.
  • Serve hot.

2. Microwave-Poached Egg on Toast

Not just for your breakfast egg, but your microwave can also come handy for your lunch egg. Lentils, brown rice or a salad can be elevated from a side dish to a main dish with a tender, poached egg on top. Here’s how to make quick, freshly poached eggs in a microwave.

Ingredients: To poach an egg you need 1 or 2 eggs, 1/4 teaspoon white vinegar, and 1/3 cup of water.

  • Fill a microwave-safe mug or small bowl with 1/3 cup water and a splash of vinegar. The vinegar is optional, but it will help the egg to coalesce a little better.
  • Gently crack an egg or two into this mug or bowl, making sure it’s covered in water. Make sure to prick the egg with a toothpick or a fork to prevent any explosions.
  • Cover your mug or bowl with a small microwave-safe plate and microwave on HIGH for a minute. The egg white should be set but the yolk still runny.
  • If the egg white is still runny then microwave it for another 10 or 20 seconds.
  • Unlike poaching eggs on the stovetop, the microwave tends to cook the yoke faster than the egg white. If you prefer your egg white a little softer then you need to take it out a little earlier.
  • After this, remove the egg from the water with a slotted spoon. Transfer it to a plate. Season it with a little salt and pepper to relish it. Enjoy on a toast, on a salad or the way u would like to have it.

3. Eggs Florentine

Eggs Florentine is a dish that owes its name to the French. The French word associated with Spinach took the place of ham in Eggs Benedict. The dish traditionally contains mushroom and spinach introduced by Catherine de Medici. To craft this yummy Eggs Florentine dish, here’s what you need to do.

Ingredients: 2 eggs, 1 tsp coconut oil, 2 tbsp water, 2 tbsp thinly sliced baby spinach, 1 tbsp shredded mozzarella cheese, 3-4 sliced grape or cherry tomatoes, 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms, salt, and ground black pepper. Personally, I prefer adding a little garlic to add to its fragrance.

  • Take a bowl and add coconut oil to it. Add eggs, water, spinach, and mushrooms and beat them all until they blend.
  • Add garlic if u wish to until it is fragrant for about 1 minute.
  • Microwave on HIGH for 30 seconds and then stir gently. Wait until the eggs start to firm.
  • Keep a check on the spinach and mushrooms so that it’s cooked properly.
  • Microwave for another 45 seconds or a minute until the egg is set.
  • Season it will salt and black pepper.
  • Sprinkle mozzarella cheese over this mixture and wait until the cheese starts to soften for about 5 minutes.
  • Top it with grapes or tomatoes as per your taste.

4. Coffee Cup Quiche

Ideal for people with a bite-sized appetite. A coffee cup is a perfect vessel for this quick meal. It takes only a few ingredients and quick cooking time that serves one. Quiches can be served hot or cold but I recommend a hot cup! This savoury dish contains few calories and skips out on those calorie-dense sauces traditionally present.

Ingredients: 1 egg, 1 and 1/2 tablespoons milk, salt, ground black pepper, 1/4 of a bagel (or similar amount of French bread), 2 teaspoons cream cheese, fresh thyme leaves or fresh chopped chives, dijon mustard.

  • Beat egg and milk together with a fork in a coffee cup, adding salt and pepper to taste.

  • Take a bowl and add egg whites and spinach leaves. Add kosher salt to it.

  • Smear a wedge of cheese on toasted bagel thin and add slices of tomato.
  • Take the bowl out of the microwave. Scoop the egg out of the bowl in a single patty and place on top of cheese and tomato.
  • Top with avocado. Season with more salt and hot sauce if desired.

How to Brew Turkish Coffee at Home?

Need a change to your morning cup? Try an aromatic cup of Turkish coffee at home. If mornings are synonymous with coffee and a cup is the first thing you look forward to before starting your day then consider experimenting with your palette. It’s different from classic cappuccino and gives a strong espresso a run for its money. A cup of Turkish coffee carries a lot of heritage. There are many fans of Turkish coffee in Dubai, so it could be an instant hit for your next coffee date.

How Is Turkish Coffee Different From Espresso

Before you dive into a cup it is important to know how Turkish coffee is different from espresso. Both an espresso and Turkish coffee tantalize the senses and offer you a strong and rich flavour. The two are separate brewing methods and not different beans. The selection of the coffee beans should come down to your own personal taste and preferences. These types of coffee are usually consumed without milk or creamer.

The difference in the brewing method consists of the number of pieces a single bean is ground into. Commonly for an espresso, a single bean is ground into 3,000 particles. Whereas in Turkish coffee, the number can reach up to 45,000 particles.

History About Espresso & Turkish Coffee

The espresso came about in 1884 and the first machine was patented by Angelo Moriondo during the industrial revolution. Not surprisingly the process involved squeezing the flavor from the coffee bean using the pressure of steam. Originating in Italy, the process found its way to the United States in 1927 in New York.

Turkish coffee, on the other hand, was introduced by the Turkish Governor of Yemen- Ozdemir Pasha around 1540. The drink was introduced to the Sultan and soon new methods of brewing came to light. Soon coffee professionals known as ‘Kahveci Usta’ would prepare the drink. The key difference is that Turkish Coffee is simmered just under boiling point, whereas espresso uses steam by exerting pressure.

How to Brew Turkish Coffee at Home in a Pot?

As the name suggests the brew carries not only a unique flavor but a rich culture that steeps itself into the brewing process.

  • To start with you will need cold filtered water, your desired Turkish coffee beans and sugar along with a pot with a wide bottom. This is usually made from copper and is known as a ‘cezve’ in Turkey, meant for brewing coffee. You may also use an ‘ibrik’ which is a pitcher/ewer and not a designated coffee pot.
  • Measure 1 ½ cup of water using the cup you intend on serving the coffee in for each cup.
  • Next add sugar to the water, do not wait to add sugar towards the end.
  • After adding water and sugar to your cezve place it on the stove on a medium-high flame until the water heats up, this should take about 3-4 minutes.
  • Now you are ready to add one tablespoon of coffee grounds per 3 ounces of water. Experiment with the levels a bit to match your preference.
  • The coffee grounds will begin to float to the top, do not stir them. This is the dark foam that Turkish coffee is famous for.
  • As the coffee begins to boil pour half the coffee into the cups
  • Allow the remainder of the brew to simmer for about 20-30 seconds before filling up the cups

The dark foam is important and is considered customary that it is served along with the coffee. The foamier your coffee the better it will taste. To drive the point home, another age old saying goes “Sleep cannot be without blanket, coffee without foam”. Knowing about the traditions and culture can make your experience much more enjoyable.

The Culture Around Turkish Coffee

Turkish coffee found footing in fortune-telling (the academic name term is ‘Tassography’. It is also an integral component in daily rituals with friends and family. A part of the custom was that the youngest girl in the family makes the coffee. She then serves it first to the eldest member present. Turkish coffee traditionally came to the table when a groom-to-be came to visit the bride’s home. If the bride made the coffee with salt instead of sugar it served as an indicator that she did not want to marry. However, if the man finished the cup silently without complaint it implied, he possessed sound character and was ready to marry. On the flip side, the groom could reject a bride if she possessed poor coffee brewing skills.

So, head on and read through this article to get to know the best tips to prevent your washing machine from damaging clothes. But, let me make it clear to you that it’s not always your washing machine’s fault. Sometimes, it is we who don’t use the washing machine correctly. Although a washing machine is an incredibly convenient and easy-to-use home appliance, using it the right way is of utmost importance. So before you point your finger at your washing machine, you need to make sure if you’re using it the right way. And to do this, follow all the tips mentioned below. So, here we go.

#1 Don’t Overload your Washing Machine

The first and most important tip to prevent the washing machine from damaging clothes is not to overload it. Overloading the washing machine is one of the most common causes of damaging clothes. I know that stuffing more clothes at a time into a single load reduces the amount of work. But, you shouldn’t be doing that. Many people overload their washing machine to reduce their effort while paying very little attention to its capacity.

But, when you overload, greater pressure is applied to the bearings, drum, and motor leading to its degradation gradually. It may also push articles of clothing into the door and under the agitator pulling them when the machine is running. So never overload the machine in spite of your busy schedule.

#2 Correctly Splitting your Washing Load

The next most important thing is correctly splitting your washing load. When the clothes are new, the dye’s that are present in these clothes loses their colour once washed in a washing machine. Not to forget, the colour of the new clothes can bleed onto the other clothes in the washing machine. This may damage your entire load thereby causing a big loss to you. So, in order to avoid this, always sort your laundry by colour, which means differentiating them by shade. The best way of sorting your clothes is to separate your darks from lights and wash them separately.

“Darks” include colours such as black, grey, dark blue, maroon, dark purple. Light colours are pastel colours such as pink, white, yellow, light blue, and lavender. Always wash dark Denims and Jeans separately as they bleed their colour most of the time. Furthermore, protect your clothes from wear and tear by separating heavier fabrics from lighter weight fabrics in the washing machine. The extra aggravation from heavy fabrics such as jackets, bath towels, heavy cotton pants, and sweaters might ruin lightweight fabrics.

Washing machines spin and toss clothes around leaving your clothes damaged. While washing a delicate or lightweight load, the cycle’s settings and temperature will be different from a heavier fabric load. Note that delicates like lingerie should be washed separately.

#3 Select the Right Cycle

Always remember that wash cycles consist of two important speeds. A speed of agitation, and a speed that spins the water out of the clothes. The wash cycle that you choose should match the type of fabric you’re washing. This will maximize cleanliness while also protecting your clothes. Hence, choosing the right cycle on a good washing machine, will not be damaging your clothes.

washing machine cycle selection
  • Normal Cycle: This cycle goes fast. It tumbles fast, spins fast and helps in cleaning very dirty and sweaty clothes, especially the ones used on a regular basis. Sturdy fabrics like cotton, linen, denim, towels, and bedding do quite well in a normal cycle.
  • Permanent or Perm Press: This cycle alternates between fast and slow. Some fabrics need fast agitation to be clean but require a slow spin to prevent wrinkles. Always use this cycle for synthetic fibres such as rayons, knits, and polyesters. Synthetic fibres are known to pill and slow spin cycles help prevent pilling.
  • Delicate Cycle: This cycle uses a slow approach which reduces agitation and prevents wear and tear. However, the level of cleanliness decreases with its slow tumbling. This is best for garments like lingerie, sequinned clothing, laced or loosely woven fabrics, and items made of sheer fabrics.
  • Special Cycles: Newer models of washing machines have special cycles that sanitize, steam. Or claim to protect whites and remove stains. It’s better to consult your machine’s manual on what each special cycle does.

#4 Use Less of the Dryer

Avoid the dryer whenever possible. Through my research, I got to know that repeatedly drying cotton garments leads to cracks in the clothing. This reduces fabric strength by 25% or more and also causes pilling. Although some clothes are better suited for the high heat, most clothes will fade and shrink and ruin the elastic. Hence, it’s always better to keep delicate clothes out of the dryer. Dryer balls serve a pretty useful purpose. They help your clothes stay separated to promote better airflow, which leads to quicker drying time. Not only will this save your clothes, but it might also save some money on your electricity bill.

#5 What’s the Right Detergent

To know what type of detergent your machine can handle and also where to put the detergent, it’s important to read the manual. The amount of detergent needed varies by the brand of detergent and type of washer, so check the back of the detergent box and also look for any labels on your washing machine to find out how much to use. Most washing machines these days can handle liquid and powder detergents, as well as other cleaning agents like bleach.

It’s better to add your detergents before you load your clothes so that the high concentration of detergent doesn’t stain or damage your clothes. In some cases, it’s best to turn on the water so the detergent dissolves before you load your clothes in. Front-loading washing machines usually have a drawer to dispense detergent and will have separate compartments to place fabric softener or bleach. Your machine will dispense the detergents at the right moment for you.

In a top-loading washing machine, you require to pour the detergent right into the drum before you start your cycle. These steps will help you prevent those cases in which not the washing machine, but the detergent damages clothing.

#6 Make Use of Temperatures

“The hotter the water, the cleaner the clothes” is a theory known and practised for long years as hot water sanitizes and kills germs better, dissolves detergents more effectively, and removes built-up grime so clothes look brighter and cleaner. But, in some cases, hot water can shrink your clothes, fade fabrics, set certain stains in, and can be quite expensive for your energy bill. So choose a water temperature that your fabrics can stand.

  • Cool Water To be used in the delicate cycle for delicate items which have dyes that might bleed, or clothes that are not too dirty. Cold water is the most energy-efficient and gentle way of washing clothes.
  • Warm Water To be used in the permanent press cycle, dark colours & moderately dirty loads.
  • Hot Water To be used for bath and kitchen towels, bedding, sturdy fabrics, or any extremely dirty items. In some machines, the water temperature is already preset according to what cycle you choose. For example, a normal cycle will most likely use hot water that is 30 °C or 40 °C.

#7 Buy Quality Garments

Always opt for quality over quantity. It doesn’t matter if you need to shell out a few more bucks. A good quality garment will last in the long run. Low-quality clothing will be a loss to you and make you feel guilty. But always remember, not every product that is expensive serves you good quality. In order to determine quality, always check the seams on the fabric. They should be uniform and, when you turn the garment inside out, the seams should be finished. If you pull on the seam and can see the thread, that’s not a good sign. Also, ensure the thread is strong and that the stitches are reinforced as the thread gets looser over time. If you buy good quality garments and you care well for them, you will enjoy them for long.

#8 Follow the Laundry Instructions on Garment

Most of the clothes are machine washable, but always check the tag for further instructions. Some clothes might shrink if you use warm or hot water to wash. Some may be able to handle bleach and some might not. And some garments can’t be washed in a machine, such as certain silks and delicates. Put aside clothes that are labelled as “hand wash only” or “dry clean only”. So make sure you check the label carefully.

#9 Wash the Delicates in a Mesh Wash Bag

Mesh bags save delicate clothes in a washing machine

You can place the delicates into mesh wash bags to protect them from harsh wear and tear. Mesh wash bags come in various sizes. They can be used to protect only one or a few pieces of garments. Mesh bags can be washed together with a normal load. They don’t protect garments from colours bleeding, so be sure to wash them with similar coloured loads. In most cases, delicates will not bleed and would be safe to wash with a light coloured load.

Load Up the Tub!

With these easy to follow tips, you can save your clothes from damage whilst washing. It pays well to wash your whites separately from coloured clothes. If your family consists of more than 3 members, then consider washing clothes in similar colours together. In case of any light bleeding, the stain may go unnoticed. Also, you’ve got to check out these 14 items that you should never put in a washing machine.

Which Features are Important for Daily Use?

The timer is an important feature when it comes to microwave selection. By setting the timer you can decide how long you want your food heated/cooked. This will vary tremendously based on the food you place in. A slice of bread from the fridge may only need 20 seconds whereas a Zip-locked bag hosting a stuffed chicken for cooking needs much longer. Probably, more than 20 minutes longer.

You should pay attention to the timer increments as they offer you an increased amount of control. The best part you don’t need to hover over your microwave as it will switch off automatically. You may be able to jump seconds, thirty seconds, minutes, two minutes, five minutes, and even ten minutes when selecting the duration. Some microwaves that come with a dial over buttons may enable you to choose uber specific timings. It allows you to perform other chores or keep an eye on the stove as the microwave will shut down after the time limit is reached.

An often overlooked feature until you need it. Defrosting features are great if you and your family eat cold cuts or freeze your vegetables. Further, defrosting a feature allows you to eat food when you want it without having to remove it from the freezer to thaw a couple of hours beforehand. This makes eating cold cuts unpleasant and forces you to dip your meats or vegetables into warm water for a while.

The best microwave oven in UAE, on the other hand, enables you to remove food items from the freezer and thaw them without half cooking them. On a normal setting, you may find that the outer layer of meat has browned while the meat is still frozen at the centre.

Auto-Cook Menu

An auto-cook menu is a great feature to have especially if you are a bachelor or family trying out a new dish. It offers you the correct timing and power levels when cooking non-recipe convenience foods. Additionally, it gauges humidity levels and allows the given food item to be cooked at an optimal temperature determined by the sensor.

You can get up to 9-12 modes in your auto cook menu that encompass everything from steamed rice to grilled chicken to baked vegetables.

Features for Cooking Enthusiasts

If you love cooking, find yourself bring home a considerable amount of food when you go shopping or on holiday, then pay close attention. The best microwave oven in UAE can help you cook palatable dishes quickly. Microwaves come with certain features that are meant to be exploited by foodies such as yourself. To name a few:

A Pre-heating Feature

A pre-heating feature is designed for foods that require a specific temperature to be cooked in. This is usually used in baking for articles such as cakes and cookies. It is also common when grilling foods such as spiced lamb and herb chicken.

A traditional large oven will consume a considerable amount of power and time to get the right temperature. A microwave with this feature is your saving grace. Especially, if you are cooking for just 1-2 persons. You can enjoy and experiment with a ton of different recipes with a microwave that has a pre-heating feature.

A Rotisserie

A rotisserie is designed for hardcore carnivores. If you love meat, you can use this grill to barbecue all kinds of meat. With a handful of spices and little cooking oil, you can cook mouth-watering succulent chunks of lamb, mutton, beef, and chicken. From shawarmas to roast legs the possibilities are endless. Just grab a large capacity microwave if you intend on cooking a leg.

A rotisserie is a great way to cook meats as it is slower than a high flame, allows the marine to seep in and preserves the moisture in the meat that high heats do not. The consistent rotation allows your meat to be cooked evenly all the way through.

A Series of Different Power Modes

Power modes allow you to manually control the temperature you want to cook your food at. The sensor in cooking modes may not cook your dish in the manner you desire. It is important to know the function of a microwave at its given wattage.

As a general rule, at 500 watts or lower your appliance becomes a makeshift dehydrator. From about 500-800 watts the microwave oven can fry as well as steam food. Highest settings are best used to reheat food in a short duration. Such as tea, coffee or some curry and rice. Adjusting the levels does not change the wattage but enables your microwave to pulse until the heat level is reached.

Which Microwave is Best for My Use Case?

For an Office Space

Office spaces do not need microwave ovens packed with a number of features. No one is going to bring the ingredients and whip up a meatball lasagne over their lunch break. You need a microwave that has a reheating function.

The most common things people at work would place in a microwave are cups of tea/coffee, sandwiches, rice and perhaps a slice of leftover pizza. A 15L or 20L microwave should suffice for this purpose. You may want to invest in 2-3 appliances to manage the rush and avoid overcrowding at the reheating station.

For Reheating

  • As a bachelor: You should consider buying a small 15L appliance with basic functions and perhaps a grilling facility. This especially holds true if the majority of your diet is take-out, sandwiches, instant noodles, or other ‘add hot water’ products.
  • As a small family: A 20L microwave can suffice for 1-3 people. Since food will be warmed up in single larger containers you can all enjoy a hot meal together.
  • As a large family: With 4 people or more and a pet may require a larger 25L or even 30L microwave. Usually, microwaves this size come with some of the latest features even if you don’t need them.

For Pizza

If you enjoy pizza and I’m not talking the frozen ones you get at Spinney’s or Carrefour. Then you need a 25L oven with a grilling function. An oven this size can help you fit in larger pizza bases and cook the bread to absolute perfection. You can experiment with thin crusts or cheese-filled ones if you fancy making your own dough as well.

For Baking

If confectionery products pique your interest then you want to buy a larger microwave. Something to the tune of 25L to 30L should be able to hold the layers and large trays that go into baking cakes and cookies. You will also want to ensure that it comes with a pre-heat function so you save on time and effort. In doing so you can have a microwave that can help you become an entrepreneur from home by selling confectionery products.

For Kebabs

If you feel like exploring the Arabic cuisine and testing your own skills making kebabs and shawarma then take a larger microwave oven. You can bring home a 25L microwave oven fitted with a rotisserie that allows you to mount the meat.

The even dispersion of heat allows your meat to cook thoroughly all the way through. You will also need a similar kind of oven if you fancy your hand at some Indian cooking. Try a tandoori chicken or steam some rice with your lentils in a microwave.

For the Elderly

When it comes to selecting the right and best microwave oven in UAE for senior citizens it is important to factor in a few extra things. To ensure they get value for money and a simple-to-use appliance read on.

Simple Usage

An elderly person is likely not impressed with a futuristic design and a barrage of buttons or knobs in front of them as they heat some tea. For the most part, they need a microwave oven that is mainly capable of heating food. If they enjoy baking as a hobby or have a secret family recipe then consider getting one roughly 20L in size. Ensure that the microwave oven has a mode that allows it to function as microwave convection. Without this, you cannot bake in a microwave.

If they are more active and enjoy making treats for the younger ones frequently, don’t miss out on the pre-heat function which is fairly simple to use. The button is displayed on the panel itself and offer some assistance in teaching them how to use it. Assuming they aren’t familiar with microwaves of course.

If your grandparents are old-school in their approach to electronics and technology then you want to find a microwave that is easy to use. This will make them more accepting as they can understand its function and operation better. (Speaking strictly from personal experiences, you, on the other hand, may have grandparents who are as inquisitive as a 3-year-old.)

Mechanical Panel

A mechanical panel is much easier on the eyes than a digital one. Even though the sleek design may appeal to the youth. Mechanical panels tend to have dedicated button functions. Simply rotate the dial to choose the desired setting and get the microwave started.

Elders will find this convenient as they will not have multiple buttons to press. This limits effort in changing settings, known sound alerts, read tiny writings on the LED display and overall feel exhausted while heating the morning cup. In one swift motion elders can choose the power and see representations of where to turn the dial for the kind of food they are heating. This also avoids any incorrect buttons being pressed or choosing the wrong setting. Consider buying a microwave like the Nikai Microwave Oven.

Members of the Family

The number of people in a family influences what type of microwave should be brought home. With elders, simple design works best but you may need multiple features. For families with two or three generations living together buy a microwave with a 25L to 30L capacity. You can get one with a tactile button system (read below) for smooth operation.

It may take an elder a slight amount of time and patience to understand how the appliance works but once they do its all hunky-dory. One such microwave oven that you can opt for is the Black & Decker Microwave Oven.

What Are Different Microwave Panels

Mechanical Panel

This type of panel is usually found in solo microwaves. These are microwaves that are mainly used for re-heating purposes. They do not have the ability to grill, steam, fry, or bake food items. They have dials and offer a great degree of control in a simple to use fashion.

Ideal for senior citizens or people who don’t bake or grill food in the microwave. The mechanical controls make it long-lasting and provide you with a heat setting that you can manually select. They are minimalistic in design.

Feather-touch Panel

These panels are trending on the market today. They offer you an innovative control system giving you increased amounts of control.

Without buttons, the panel senses your finger the way your smartphone does. It saves people the hassle of pressing multiple times. The buttons getting stuck after using it for prolong periods. It also makes cleaning astoundingly easy as you can wipe it down in one swift motion. They usually pack in a large number of features and cooking modes.

Tactile Button Panel

These come with a blend of buttons and knobs to suit your convenience. They are usually found in busy kitchens with a lot of baking and mixing. Having soiled fingers can spoil a feather touch panel but a tactile button panel is built for that. You can use the dial even with powder-coated hands that are ever so common whilst baking. Jog-wheel controls make this simple and easy to wipe down once you get to cleaning.

Pay attention to the panel and how it fits into your daily microwave oven usage. By getting the best microwave oven in UAE with the right panel you can reduce the time spent in the kitchen. For both cleaning and cooking purposes.

Microwave Myths: Is your Food Safe to Eat?

You’ve heard the rumours, they are plentiful. Terrorizing stories about how even the best microwave oven in UAE can cause your food to become radioactive. There are ridiculous beliefs that microwaves cause cancer and ones that say microwaved water alters DNA. So let’s dig into it, shall we? Yes? SI? Okay.

Right off the bat, microwaves do not produce gamma rays or make your food radioactive. They are electromagnetic, which means you will not turn into the incredible hulk by heating some broccoli in your microwave. You don’t have to take my word for it, this is credited to the dedicated effort put forth by bodies such as WHO (World Health Organization) and Harvard Medical School.

Does this mean there are no risks involved? No.

To the naysayers, microwaving food does not destroy the nutritional content of foods. Certain nutrients break down when exposed to heat. This is regardless whether you toss them in a microwave, stove, furnace, or industrial boiler. To attribute nutritional demise to microwaves is unfair. As for cancer, there is no proof that microwaves cause cancer. Just mere theories being tossed around.

However, this does give rise to the problems associated with insufficient cooking. There are certain foods (especially meats) that contain bacteria that are potentially harmful to people. The bacteria only die when exposed to a certain level of heat. Be sure to check it up based on which meat you are cooking. Next, it is important to note that the WHO states “Microwave energy does not penetrate well in thicker pieces of food, and may produce uneven cooking.” This can be potentially dangerous when cooking red meat in a microwave oven. So ensure you use microwave-safe plastics and containers. You can also utilize Zip-Lock bags for cooking purpose.

Is there a way to retain the nutritional quality of my food?

Assuming you’re still reading and support microwave cooking you’re in luck, remember all those fanatics you don’t eat out or use certain foods. Well, they may be on to something. There is substantial evidence that eating foods raw, or as close to raw as possible, preserves the most amount of nutrients. You’ve heard it before, the way your grandmother made butter at home, and incorporated dry fruits as part of the staple diet. Of course, I am not saying that you need to cancel your Zomato, Guidepal, or Roundmenu membership but simply limit exposure. When possible try and eat foods that require little cooking and minimal reheating.

Your body will thank you for eating whole foods without any processing or preservatives. Also, you will derive the highest amount of nutritional content from those foods and feel fuller for longer.

There are many myths surrounding microwaves and health. Some people say its cancer-causing and kill the nutrients of the food. Many scientific studies have shown that this is not true. If you are still sitting with one leg on each side of the fence, here is a piece on if microwaving food is safe and healthy.

Working of a Microwave Oven

The function of a microwave is to warm/ cook food items with just a click of a button. Therefore this is done with the help of high-frequency electromagnetic waves. These waves are produced by the electron tube present inside even in the best microwave oven in UAE. This tube is called the magnetron. The waves are then reflected inside the microwave walls to be absorbed by the food items. Furthermore, the water molecules present inside the food vibrate which causes it to heat up.

Although there is a point to consider, that even if the heat is created from the inside of the food a microwave oven doesn’t cook the food from the inside out. In fact, it works its way through the outer layers first and then the heat of the outer layer cooks the centre. Which is why you can have instances where your food item might be overcooked from the outside but undercooked towards the centre.

Besides that, getting the best microwave oven in UAE is worth the buy since you can have almost any meal cooked in no time. Therefore, saving in on the energy and resources used to cook the meal through the traditional method. Furthermore, a microwave doesn’t decrease the level of nutritional value. Since it cooks food without any additional water.

Microwave FAQ’s

How to choose the Best Coffee Machine in UAE

Take a quick look at these points to help you make the right choice in buying a coffee machine at your home or office.

  • Preparation: This will tell you how coffee is prepared. There are various ways. Good quality of coffee is just plain black. Average coffee requires milk and a little sugar to be added to it to make it taste good. If you consider poor quality coffee even cream doesn’t work. This is the reason for preparing different types of coffee.
  • Temperature for Brewing: This is the most important factor to be taken into consideration as average coffee machines don’t follow the basic guidelines being that the perfect temperature required during the brewing is 195o to 205o. Even a slight alteration to the temperature destroys the essence of the coffee beans and makes it taste bitter.
  • Fresh Grinding: Whenever you use a coffee machine, always remember to use fresh ground coffee and not pre-ground coffee. Pre-ground coffee doesn’t taste as good as compared to the freshly ground coffee. The aroma that is most wanted is always present in freshly ground coffee and is somehow always lost in pre-ground coffee .
