How to Brew Turkish coffee?

Let’s look at the traditional method of brewing Turkish coffee in your home which can take a bit of practice to get right, so don’t get disheartened if you don’t succeed at first.

  • 1. Grind: It’s important to use the proper grind when preparing Turkish coffee. The resulting grinds should have a powder-like consistency. The amount of coffee you’ll need for brewing Turkish coffee will vary depending on the amount of water you used in your ibrik. It is recommended using approximately 5-6 grams of coffee per 50 ml of water used to fill the ibrik.
  • 2. Add Cold Water: Add enough cold water to reach just beneath the neck of your ibrik.
  • 3. Add Sugar (Optional): Often the sugar is not added to Turkish coffee in our home. Nonetheless, sugar is commonly used in Turkish coffee. If you’re planning to use sugar, add it to the cold water before adding the coffee. Stir the water until the sugar dissolves.
  • 4. Add Coffee: Use a small spoon to stir the coffee into the water. Many people like to add fresh cardamom to Turkish coffee but this is optional. If you’re brewing with cardamom, crack open 2-3 cardamom pods to taste and add the seeds to your coffee.
  • 5. Bring To First Boil: Heat the coffee over medium heat. If you’re ever in doubt, it’s better to err on the side of a lower heat – if it is heated too quickly there won’t be enough time for proper extraction. From this point forward you should watch the pot closely as Turkish coffee can boil over in a blink of an eye. As the coffee nears a boil it’ll start to foam. Once the foam looks close to spilling over, quickly remove the ibrik from the heat. Let it sit for a few seconds for the foam to settle.
  • 6. Bring To Second Boil: Once the foam has settled, return the ibrik to the heat. The purpose of removing the coffee from the heat and returning it to a boil is to maximize the extraction time of the coffee without burning the grounds (which could impart a burnt or over-cooked taste). Let the coffee begin to foam again and remove before it can boil over. Let the foam settle again.
  • 7. Bring To Third Boil: Return the ibrik to the heat for a third and final boil – again removing it just before it’s able to boil over. A good pot of Turkish coffee will have a lot of foam

Now you could go out and buy a ‘cezve’ or ‘ibrik’ which is the pot required to brew the coffee and then learn the meticulous art over and over again until you perfect the technique. Or you could simply bring home the best Turkish coffee machine in Saudi Arabia and add ease to your mornings.

How are Turkish coffee and an Espresso different from each other?

Turkish coffee is ground much finer than your typical pour-over coffee, and even more so than espresso, which has a pretty fine grind itself. Espresso is a very fine grind, and Turkish coffee is one level finer, like a soft powder, almost the consistency, and feel of flour. If we consider the ‘Grounding Process’, for an Espresso, a coffee bean gets ground into about 3,000 pieces. Whereas, in Turkish coffee, a single bean can be ground into as many as 45,000 particles. With Turkish coffee you can cut short your trips to the regional barista before work, save on money and develop a new taste for Turkish coffee.

Coffee beans used to make Turkish coffee

Any coffee bean may be used for making Turkish coffee. However, arabica varieties are considered best, but robusta or a blend can also be used. The beans must be ground to a very fine powder, which is left in the coffee when served. For those who are new to the coffee world here is what and how these beans are different from one another. Arabica coffee beans are more oval and flat in shape and pack a sweeter, lighter, smoother taste. They also have more oils in the beans themselves, so they can pack more fruity, zesty, sweet flavours. Arabica beans account for about 75% of all the coffee on the market and are typically more expensive to purchase.  Robusta beans are slightly smaller and rounder in shape and pack a stronger, bitter, powerful taste. Since they have fewer oils, they often have more natural, earthy, heavier flavours. They account for 25% of coffee on the market and are often less expensive than Arabica beans.
